about

The original idea for this came from a comment written by a 9 year-old boy in the guest book at my girlfriend's woodwork exhibition, which called it "Strange but nice". I just really liked that phrase and it popped back into my head a few weeks later, when walking home from a day of recording the album - I thought it really summed the record up. As I kept walking I decided to write a song with the same name.
I didn’t have a guitar where I was staying so I woke up early the next morning and went to the studio. I wrote the guitar part quietly on a nylon-string guitar and was pleasantly surprised at how it felt to play and sing on its own. My idea from the day before had been more of a garage/psych-rock kind of thing with drums and bass and everything. When Tom arrived at the studio I asked if we could quickly record the song - it was really exciting to record something less than an hour after it's written, it was such a unique opportunity. We set it up so I played guitar and sang at the same time with the vocal mike turned up really loud so I could sing it so quietly.

lyrics

So strange
Strange but nice (x2)
So cool
Don't even think twice
Strange but nice (x3)
